Researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine have identified mechanisms for aging through a new study that categorized how humans age into different classes dubbed “ageotypes.”
This classification system is based on the molecular changes that occur in each individual over time, and could potentially offer insight into why people experience age-related diseases differently.
The 4 Types of Aging
As Stanford researchers have discovered recently, people age along four biological processes in their bodies: metabolic, hepatic (liver), immunological, and nephrotic (kidney).
People who are metabolic agers, for example, may be more likely to develop diabetes as they age, or exhibit indicators of raised hemoglobin A1c, a test to show blood sugar levels. Metabolic aging leads to many cardiovascular diseases.
Whereas individuals with hepatic aging may develop acute liver damage, non-alcoholic fatty liver, or a progressive dysfunction as a result of aging-related decline in mitochondrial activity.
